Three original tips for performing background checks
background screening is becoming ever more important, and increasingly used by employers, some common myths still surround pre-employment checks and exactly what they are. Most businesses understand the process – you go to a professional company, request the information you need and they provide it for you. This allows you, as an employer, to evaluate who you are bringing into the company and whether they will fit in. However, that’s not the be all and end all – there are certain other things to think about. So rather than provide you with the standard tips for getting a background checks, take a look at these alternative and original top 3 tips that you may not have considered before: Not all jobs require the same background check You may think that a background check is a background check, end of story. But that’s not the case. Not all background checks are equal and certain jobs require more intense, and more specific, background screening. For example, when a potential employee will be working with children, a more intense screening of their criminal past will be necessary. Or if an applicant will be driving a vehicle, a vehicle record history check will be important. Consider what role the employee will be involved in, and choose a background check accordingly. Remain vigilant even after a background check has come back clean Even though a background screening comes back clean, you are not necessarily out of the woods yet. Remember, background checks are not 100% perfect and criminals are not always caught. Furthermore, just because someone is clean now, they may not always be in the future. For this reason it is important to remain vigilant and continue to run checks on your employees, however long they have been with your company. Background checks are never free One of the main reasons that businesses argue against the performing of background checks is the cost. Even though some professional background screening companies offer very reasonable prices, they will never be able to offer you the information for free. It is not free for them to retrieve the information, hence it would be a strange (and awful) business model if they were to pass it on to you at no cost! There are many ads these days for ‘free’ or ‘instant’ background checks – stay away. These will either be scams or the information they provide will be useless. And there we have some alternative tips that may not have crossed your mind as an employer. Hopefully this has gone a little further than the usual articles that simply you step-by-step through a background check, and given you some things to think about next time you’re hiring new employees.
