Survey: Background checks are now (almost) universal

survey from the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) has found that almost all of the employers surveyed (96%!) claimed that their organizations performed employment background screening. It’s significant progress and exciting to see just how many employers understand the value that proper screening plays in their organization. Public safety was overwhelmingly cited as the top reason why employers conducted background screening, with 89% of respondents stating that they conducted background screening to protect employees, customers, and others. Of the four percent that stated they do not conduct background checks:

  • 37% stated they use other tools or methods to screen applicants
  • 29% cited cost as the reason
  • 27% could not state a reason why their company does not conduct background screenings
The survey also noted that 80% of employers have a documented screening policy, while most companies wait to conduct a background screen until after a job interview or conditional job offer (86% conduct a background screen after the job interview). The survey was conducted between November 2016 and February 2017 by over 1,528 HR professional participants, gauging how companies approach background screening in order to identify today’s trends and practices.
