Residents angry hiring goes ahead without background check

background check still pending. This particular situation is going on in DeFuniak Springs, Florida – where city council members say they’re still on-track to hire new city manager Mike Standley next Monday, even though a background check may not be completed by then. Some residents were already upset the council agreed to hire Mike Standley last month, without interviewing him, checking his references, or even performing background or credit checks. Last week, city officials decided to request all that, even though Standly’s contract has been prepared. Even though the background check is still pending, he is scheduled to begin as new city manager next week. Standley was previously the DeFuiniak Springs city manager for 21-years, before abruptly resigning in 2005. Council members cited his previous employment as reason for waiving the interview, and checking references, background and credit. The city council in this story are making the unfortunate mistake of thinking that if someone didn’t have any indiscretions in the past, they won’t now – an issue we discussed in this blog last week. It’s incredibly important to run checks regularly, regardless of whether someone achieved satisfactory results previously. There are many examples of employees being hired having passed a background check, only to get in trouble with the law at a later date. Should an employer not perform another employment screening check they may never become aware of this later indiscretion. This can put a company at great risk financially in the future, which can have dire consequences. The key takeaway here is to continue to run employment checks on your staff regularly, as you never know what you might have missed or what may have happened since the previous test.
