Obama supports tougher background checks
President Obama has expressed his thoughts regarding the role background checks should play in the process an individual goes through to obtain a firearm. After much discussion regarding background checks and guns since Jared Loughner caused chaos in Tuscon, Arizona, this is a major step forward for those who are seeking more intense background screening when it comes to owning a firearm. Obama urged “an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks”, and went on to say that “a man our Army rejected as unfit for service; a man one of our colleges deemed too unstable for studies; a man apparently bent on violence, was able to walk into a store and buy a gun”. While the debate will continue to rage, Obama laying his opinions down on the table will certainly provide campaigners with a boost. Nonetheless, it still begs many questions – eloquently discussed by Reason.com. Primarily – that these suggestions would not have stopped Loughner from getting hold of a gun in the first place. With more than 2 months gone since the shooting, we seem to be no closer to a conclusion on whether background checks will become more severe when it comes to purchasing a gun. But with Obama making such statements, we may be getting nearer to a resolution.]]>
