North Carolina background checks

Companies can perform a variety of background checks when hiring an employee, or once they are hired, to ensure they are not putting the organizations’ status or functioning in jeopardy. The ever increasing amount of lawyers eager to pick up cases pertaining to employee rights has reinforced the necessity for companies to conduct an adequate background check to eliminate unfavorable conduct issues that may ensue. In the state of North Carolina there are four primary verification services that a company is entitled to use. 1. The Employment Verification Check is used to verify an applicant’s previous or present employment and pertains to start date, end date, salary, title, and eligibility for rehire. These employment checks are processed under the stringent guidelines of the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). 2. The Personal or Professional Reference Verification serves to recover personal or professional reference from a single provider such as a manager or associate. 3. The Educational Verification Check helps to verify the applicant’s schools, GPA, dates of attendance, and degree. 4. The Credentials Verification Check serves to recover the verification of the applicant’s license, credentials/certifications, the dates issued, expiration date, and standing with the issuing authority. Under the FCRA it is required that an employer receives an applicant’s permission before obtaining educational, military service, or medical records. While it is becoming a more common practice among businesses, the FCRA does not obligate employers to perform background checks but it does institute a standard that employers must implement in employment screening. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that a report must be conducted by an outside company, known as a “consumer reporting agency” or business that “for monetary fees, dues or on a cooperative nonprofit basis, regularly engages in…assembling …information on consumers for the purpose of furnishing consumer reports to third parties.” This is where Mind Your Business is here to help.
