North Carolina unemployment holds steady in May
So what caused the job losses? One economist told ABC11 it’s partially because of the manufacturing sector, which hasn’t bounced back like other industries in other states. Manufacturing makes up 23 percent of the North Carolina’s economy. The national average is 13 percent. Rick Henderson with the conservative John Locke Foundation pointed out that while the numbers are seasonally adjusted, the seasons this year may have actually skewed the results. “We had a warmer winter than usual,” said Henderson. “So you saw the loss of 8,000 construction jobs last month. Those were 8,000 people who probably didn’t lose their jobs in November and December because we had a warm winter.” By the state’s numbers, North Carolina ranked tenth in job growth from the beginning of 2010 to April of 2012. Gov. Bev Perdue issued a statement Friday that said Republicans are “rooting for failure.” Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, who is running for governor, put what failure there has been, back on Republicans in the legislature. Story originally posted at abclocal.com.]]>
