Nashville gets it right with background checks
background checks on almost a third of schools employees – those who were hired before background screening became a requirement. This issue came to light after almost 10 percent of 600 janitors flunked a background check, when they were being considered for being re-hired. They had been working in public schools and around children, with criminal records for aggravated assault, robbery, forgery, DUI, sexual battery and indecent exposure. This $144,000 cost can be spread over three years and, with a $633.3 million budget, $48,000 a year seems more than manageable. The schools could even apply for further grant money to help them cover these costs. As is emphasized, this isn’t about trying to catch out teachers, but protecting students. “It’s just not worth the risk to save $144,000” – a statement that MYBINC avidly agrees with.]]>
