May 2018 employment: US adds 223,000 jobs
According to ‘The Employment Situation‘ report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in the United States dropped to 3.8% and the number of unemployed persons declined to 6.1 million, while the economy added 223,000 jobs, in May.
After six months at 4.1%, unemployment finally broke below 4% in April for the first time since December, 2000.
Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (3.5 percent), Blacks (5.9 percent), and Asians (2.1 percent) decreased in May. The jobless rates for adult women (3.3 percent), teenagers (12.8 percent), Whites (3.5 percent), and Hispanics (4.9 percent) changed little over the month.
The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for March 2018 was revised up from 135,000 to 155,000, and the change for April 2018 was revised down from 164,000 to 159,000. After revisions, job gains have averaged 179,000 over the last 3 months.
