January 2014: Employment rate holds steady

Bureau of Labor Statistics. This leaves the number of unemployed Americans at approximately 10.2 million.

  • In January, the labor force increased by 499,000 full-time jobs, while part-time employees dropped by 514,000 to 7.3 million.
  • The construction industry added 48,000 jobs in January, primarily in residential building and non-residential specialty contractors. Civil engineering jobs also were on the rise.
  • Manufacturing jobs increased by 21,000, with the heaviest increases in machinery.
  • Professional and business services gained 36,000 jobs in January, down from the 2013 average of 55,000 jobs per month.
  • The leisure and hospitality industry saw 24,000 new jobs added.
Of course, despite overall numbers remaining fairly consistent from December to January, some industries fared better than others.
  • Health care jobs have remained fairly stagnant since November 2013. The transportation, information and financial industries also held steady, with no major increase or decrease in jobs in January 2014.
  •  The federal government lost 12,000 jobs, including 9,000 jobs with the U.S. Postal Service.
  • Retail jobs decreased by 13,000, but remained fairly stable for the industry. Sporting goods, music, hobby and book store jobs decreased by 22,000, despite trends upward over the previous months. The decrease may be due to the holiday season’s temporary workers in various retailers.
