Increase of 162,000 US jobs according to July 2013 Employment Situation Report

the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this month. The number of unemployed persons dropped to 11.5 million. Employment rose in retail trade, food and drinking places, professional and business services, financial activities, and wholesale trade during July 2013. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth has averaged 189,000 jobs per month. Among specific industries, the report found:

  • Retail trade employment added 47,000 jobs in July 2013 and has added 352,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Leisure and hospitality employment in food services and drinking places increased by 38,000 jobs in July 2013 and by 381,000 jobs over the year.
  • Professional and business services employment added 36,000 jobs in July 2013.
  • Financial activities employment increased by 15,000 jobs in July 2013 and has added 120,000 jobs over the year.
  • Wholesale trade employment increased by 14,000 jobs in July 2013 and the industry has added 83,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Employment in other major industries including manufacturing, health care, mining and logging, construction, transportation and warehousing, and government showed little change in July 2013.
In addition, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls edged down by 2 cents to $23.98, following a 10-cent increase in June.
