Firefighters undergo drug testing
drug testing, the Boston Globe reports. While there has been no official report, it is believed that everyone passed. Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser voluntarily took the tests earlier this week when he learned that such drug testing was going to begin. “I thought it was the right thing to do to show I believed in the testing program. It’s a good thing, it’s being conducted properly, and the guys shouldn’t have anything to fear. I’m willing to do it too.” Talks between the city and the union had already reached an impasse in August 2007, when two firefighters were killed in a blaze. Autopsy results showed that one of the firefighters had traces of cocaine in his system, while the other had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. Drug screening could have prevented this situation and saved lives, which is why all parties feel it important to begin these processes. From MYB‘s perspective, it is important to see these measures introduced. We see too many examples of public service failure when it comes to background checks and drug screening, so to see organizations taking action offers hope for future improvements on a national scale.]]>
