Employment engagement biggest priority for HR departments in 2013

The State of HR survey 2013: recovery in sight?, which polled more than 300 HR professionals across 13 industry sectors, also found that only 53% of respondents measure employee engagement in their organization. Other key findings include:

  • For the first time since the survey started in 2008, this year’s survey reports that the recruitment of staff has returned to positive territory. 46% reported an increase in recruitment in 2012 and 45% expect an increase in workforce size in 2013.
  • 26% of respondents plan to focus HR resources on health and well-being in 2013.
  • As with last year’s results, it is poor performers who are still more positively differentiated by HR teams in comparison to the rest of the workforce, with 38% of respondents indicating that they allocate their highest level of resources to this group.
  • 39% of respondents reported an increased focus on training and development in 2012, while 53% expect an increase in 2013.
  •  48% of respondents reported relationships with senior/line managers as a main source of employee grievance.
  • 19% of respondents have retained a default retirement age (DRA), despite it being abolished on 1 October 2011.
  • 65% of respondents considered performance management to be the major issue facing their HR function in 2013.
Stuart Woollard, director of King’s College’s management learning board and co-author of the research, said: “While some findings echo cautious optimism that economic recovery may be in sight, our survey again highlights a deeply unsettling work environment with organizations, made up of lean work forces, pushing their employees even harder. “Worryingly, while the management of performance and employee engagement are top priorities for 2013, our findings suggest that many organizations have a false picture of workforce well-being, with many using poor and flimsy evidence as the basis for making critical management decisions.” One significant way to ensure a happier and more productive work environment is to set things on the right path from the get-go, by improving your hiring process.
