Catholic Church implementing new background procedures
Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese of Missouri being one of the first to step up their efforts. Although they have been performing background checks since 1993, this is another push to assure children’s safety. The Diocese is strengthening background check measures as part of a push to ensure sexual predators don’t gain access to Church positions, and to respond to those who have suffered abuse. As should be expected, these new rules will impact those who wish to get involved in the church, as well as those who already hold positions. As mentioned previously in the MYB blog, other churches across America have been calling for these background screening changes to be brought into effect. Of all public institutions, a church is a place where people should feel secure and protected, and introducing these checks should take us closer to making that happen. I have no doubt that, over time, these screening processes will come into play across all religious organizations – what is nice is to see America being one of the places taking that first, important step.]]>
