April 2014: drop in unemployment rate, more jobs available

Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate dropped in April to 6.3 percent, down .4 percent from March. Notably, the number of unemployed people — for both those that are re-entering the workforce, and those who are entering the work force for the first time — is down from previous months.

  • In April, 288,000 new non-farm jobs were added, an increase from the monthly average of 190,000 new jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Of those new, non-farm jobs, 75,000 were in business services, including temporary help, computer-related services and management.
  • The retail industry added 35,000 new jobs last month, and the workforce in this industry increased by more than 327,000 in the past 12 months. Food service also saw an increase in 33,000 jobs, which is in the same ballpark as its previous monthly gains.
  • Construction saw gains of 32,000 jobs, with about 35 percent of those jobs related to civil engineering construction. Construction job growth has increased dramatically over the past six months.
The employment rate remained fairly consistent in many other industries, including transportation, manufacturing, and financial. The report did not indicate a loss of jobs in any of the major industries in April.]]>
